Protected PowerPoint files open in read-only mode after applying the latest MSOffice 2013 patch

This is an unexpected behaviour that has been seen in protected PowerPoint files with a specific patch update of MSOffice 2013.

This happens only if:

  1. You have installed the latest patch of MSOffice 2013 or Office 365 desktop that was released on 11-Nov-2014.
  2. You are using PowerPoint files with Edit (or higher) access permissions.
  3. You are using the FileSecure Desktop Client to open protected documents.

Why does this happen?

  1. In the latest patch of MS Office 2013, Microsoft has made some changes in the file opening process.
  2. The PowerPoint program does not release the handle to certain internal objects while re-opening the file.
  3. Due to this, when the file is closed and re-opened to display the actual content, the file gets displayed in read-only mode.
  4. You will find more details about this MS Office patch at  https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2889936

You are safe if:

            1. You haven’t upgraded to the latest 11-Nov-2014 patch for MSOffice 2013.

You should not have a problem if you are using either of these versions or earlier ones.

PowerPoint 2013 - 15.0.4629.1000, Microsoft Office - 15.0.4667.1001

Power Point 2013 - 15.0.4649.1000, Microsoft Office - 15.0.4659.1001

             2. You are using an earlier version of PowerPoint like 2010 or 2007.

Further action:

  1. As of now, we recommend that you don’t upgrade to the latest patch of MS Office 2013.
  2. If you find that PowerPoint files are opening in Read-only mode even with Edit permissions, please write an email to support@seclore.com or log a ticket.
  3. As an immediate work around, you can remove the 11-Nov-2014 patch and downgrade to the previous version of MSOffice.
